Everything you need to know about the new Simpler Recycling legislation

07/02/25

You might have heard that the UK government will be rolling out the Simpler Recycling legislation as of 31st March 2025, a new initiative aimed at streamlining recycling across England. Designed to make waste management easier and more effective, the legislation sets out new standards for businesses and local authorities. Here’s everything you need to know about Simpler Recycling, and how Tom White can support your journey to compliance, including….

What is Simpler Recycling?

On 21 October 2023, the UK government introduced the Simpler Recycling legislation to tackle inconsistent recycling practices and reduce landfill waste. This law provides standardised recycling requirements to ensure that everyone, from households to businesses, has clear and consistent guidance on what can and cannot be recycled.

Steve Molyneux, Deputy Director of Waste Regulation at the Environment Agency, summarised its importance:

“Inappropriately managed waste can have a terrible impact on local communities and nature and undermines investment in the UK by responsible businesses. That’s why we are working to stop waste crime, which is estimated to cost the economy in England £1 billion per year.”

What’s included in Simpler Recycling?

The new default requirement for businesses will be 4 containers for:

  1. Residual (non-recyclable) waste
  2. Food waste - with 10 full-time employees or more (mixed with garden waste, if appropriate)
  3. Paper and card
  4. All other dry recyclable materials (plastic, metal and glass)

The goals and benefits of Simpler Recycling

By introducing this new legislation the government’s main aims include reducing landfill waste by capturing recyclable materials at source, improving recycling efficiency with standardised practices and overall promoting sustainability by supporting the circular economy.

Environment Secretary, Therese Coffey, highlighted its impact stating:

“Simpler Recycling will make it easier for us all to recycle and protect our environment while reducing carbon emissions.”

In terms of the benefits of Simpler Recycling legislation to the end user, it should hopefully provide clarity and consistency for businesses and households following uniform recycling rules, whilst increasing the recycling rates. It has also been predicted that there will be significant cost savings, as improved recycling efficiency can lower waste management expenses, and it will also allow businesses to enhance their environmental responsibility.
