For 10 years, we've supported the independent construction firm, Deeley Group, to ensure they achieve their sustainability goals. Deeley Group needed a supplier and construction waste management operator that was sustainably motivated, reliable and consistent - which is why they chose Tom White. Join us as we discuss our powerful partnership with the construction firm.

About Deeley Group

Deeley Group is a family-owned construction and development firm based in the Midlands. Having grown from strength to strength over 85 years, the independent company has always prioritised sustainability, providing eco-friendly building solutions for their customers such as EV charging points, solar panels, rainwater harvesting measures and PIR lighting.

Sustainability and social responsibility within their community are two fundamental focal points for Deeley Group. Their vision is to provide long term sustainable benefits by delivering a "best in class" performance, supporting communities, protecting the natural environment, improving lives, and responsibly generating economic benefit for the region.

Eleanor Deeley, Joint Managing Director at Deeley Group, said: "It's important that businesses, regardless of their size, act now and take vital measures to protect the future of our planet."

At Tom White, we couldn't agree more, which is why Protect our Planet is one of our fundamental values that navigates our sustainable strategy.

The challenge

Ahead of the 10-year partnership, Deeley Group made it clear that they had three main priorities that needed to be addressed and achieved by us as their construction waste management suppliers:

Deeley Group are at the heart of Coventry's growth, having expanded local communities through construction over the years. To further contribute to the community and the planet, ensuring sustainable construction waste management practices was paramount.

The solution

We created a sustainably motivated construction waste management plan that helped Deeley Group put their sustainability goals into action. Over the last year, we've assisted in the development of their extension project at Ernesford Grange & Riverbank Academy.

Last year, Deeley Construction started work on Phase Two of an £8.4 million extension project at Ernesford Grange & Riverbank Academy. The project finished in September 2022, creating new teaching spaces and classrooms, resulting in around 180 new places for potential students - giving locals more opportunities. The three-storey expansion was Phase Two of a project which had already seen Deeley Construction build a state-of-the-art extension for Riverbank Academy during Phase One.

Construction waste management process

We provided Deeley Construction with 43 skips - a mixture of 7.3 yard, 10 yard, and 14 yard skips - to remove 41 tonnes of materials from the site. During the ongoing project, a mix of construction waste, wood, scrap metal, and non-hazardous waste was generated on the site from packaging, demolition, and surplus materials. These materials needed to be processed quickly, safely and with the least amount of carbon impact.

By choosing our local construction waste management operator, Deeley Construction reduced its carbon impact by limiting how far its waste travels for processing. During the process, loaded skips were collected or exchanged, and the materials were taken to our on-site material recycling facility (MRF), where we segregated materials by type. Once separated, the materials were baled and sent to other material processors within the UK to be made into products that then go back into the supply chain as new products.

Results

With the support of Tom White's construction waste management services, the waste materials from Ernesford Grange Community Academy have been collected, separated and recycled, resulting in 100% landfill diversion, helping to reduce Deeley Group's carbon footprint.

A ten-year partnership with Tom White and 100% landfill diversion of 41 tonnes of waste from the Phase II extension project at Ernesford Grange & Riverbank Academy demonstrates our commitment to sustainable construction waste management. As Deeley Construction's preferred waste operator in Coventry, we will continue to work with the group on future projects and ways to lower their waste output, which is a high priority for Deeley Group, through our advancing waste-to-product processes supporting their net-zero targets.

"We have worked in partnership with Tom White for over a decade and have always been impressed by their service and level of legal documentation and reports. They have always been a step ahead in how they manage their waste and ensure that waste is recycled or reused and diverted from landfill."
